A. Administrative Matters

• Welcome
Cara Mascini welcomed the attendees and began the EIX session at 11:01 local time. She noted that she would chair the first session and Andy would chair the afternoon session. Fearghas sent his apologies.

• Finalise agenda
The co-chair went through the agenda and asked if there were any additions or omissions. There were none.

B. Scribe and Jabber Monitor
Cara thanked Tim Bruijnzeels, Alex Band and Fergal Cunningham from the RIPE NCC for, respectively, technical, Jabber and scribe duties.

C. Review of RIPE 58 Minutes
The minutes were approved with no comments.

Raul Echeberria (LACNIC) asked how GigaPix is funded if there are no port or membership fees. Carlos said there was some funding from the Ministry.

Will Hargrave (LONAP) asked about the resilience protocol INEX would be using.

Nick said they would retire the Cisco kit at some stage and when they did they would move to MRP. They will start out with spanning tree. Mike Hughes (LINX) said he liked that INEX was doing something the right size for its network. He said it doesn't scale but it doesn't need to. Other people have failed to build a successful IX because they were too concerned with scaling when they were smaller'.

An attendee commented that LONAP had an 800 gigabit spike that morning and Will said it was probably a monitoring error and they would fix it.

There was a question from Carlos Friacas (GigaPix) asked Franck if there
was anything in place that checked for no transit.

Franck said they had some basic statistics on the switches. He said it was in the contract when you connect to SFINX that you don't do transit, and if an ISP is suspected of transit SFINX asks it to stop or else they will shut down the port.

Cara Mascini (AMS-IX) asked if SFINX was still engaged in the selection process regarding switches.

Franck said they were in contact with vendors and would make a choice shortly.

Cara said asked attendees if the WG should move some presentations to the later session. There was a show of hands in favour of doing this.

Cara said the sessions after the VSIX update would be moved to the afternoon session.

• Terremark
Josh Snowhorn gave the Terremark Turkey IX update. The presentation is available at:

Josh asked what the Turkey IS should be called and there were a number of suggestions. He said he would make a decision and bring it to the next EIX meeting.

E. Make Yourself Attractive for Peering - Wolfgang Tremmel - DE-CIX

Wolfgang asked for a show of hands to find out in the audience represented an ISP and who peered. Approximately 25-30 attendees raised their hands.

He then asked who of these had a webpage stating their peering policy. Approximately four people raised their hands.

Wolfgang asked who had heard of PeeringDB and almost everyone raised their hands.

He asked who had an open peering policy and about 25 people raised their hands.

He asked who had a closed peering policy and about 25 people raised their hands.

He asked who had published their peering policy. About five people raised their hands.

He asked who had documented their AS-Object in the RIPE Database and approximately eight people raised their hands. He said it was not very professional if you failed to do this. He added that eight or so out of approximately 50 people peering was not good.

Wolfgang asked if there were any questions.

An attendee said he would like to see this presentation at NANOG. He advocated using PeeringDB as it was the only neutral and open place where you could update your information about locations and IP addresses. He asked people to go there and they would be releasing new suites of tools soon. Finally, he said that people inputted IPv6 numbers differently and he asked that they put them in correctly.

Wolfgang said there was a second part of this presentation that focused on PeeringDB.

Gert Doering (SpaceNet) said people should not put their public peering negotiations on public mailing lists like the exchange point lists.

F. Showing the winning film from the Euro-IX film competition

Cara introduced the film and explained how it came to be and that it was about what an Internet Exchange is.

There was a warm round of applause after the film. The title is “The Internet Revealed”.

Serge Radovcic from Euro-IX said anyone who wanted to help with translating subtitles into a non-English language should please contact him.

An attendee asked if the film had been run past regulatory affairs officers because there is a couple of things will make real problems with governmental audiences. He said the idea of sharing of workload and the idea that peering involves anyone giving anything for free to anyone else are both substantial mischaracterisations of the peering transaction.

G. Euro-IX Report

H. Euro-IX Router-Server WG

I. Rebuilding a Plane in Mid-Air
Martin Pels (AMS-IX) explained how AMS-IX migrated from standard L2 to VPLS without any customer impact. The presentation is available at:

J. Equinix - The Carrier Ethernet Exchange
Remco van Mook spoke about the Equinix Ethernet Exchange. The presentation is available at:

Andy Davidson (LONAP) asked if there was any future in this model for IXP design from today.

Remco said he could see there being a couple of separated worlds for a while. He said you could run an Internet exchange on top of an Ethernet exchange but it does not make sense to do so. He said the concept has yet to be proven and he added that the forum would like neutral feedback.
