The RIPE Community
RIPE is a forum open to everyone interested in the operation of the Internet. Since 1989, it has brought together people and communities to share information and ideas, discuss best common practices, and carry out technical coordination work.
When Bangladesh vanished from the global routing table in July 2024, public routing data captured the event as it unfolded. Drawing on first-hand observations from inside one affected network, this article explores what that data can and cannot tell us.
RPKI has made real progress against prefix hijacking. But when you map every known class of BGP attack against the defences that exist, four of them turn out to sit entirely outside cryptographic validation: handled with local filters, static thresholds and reactive response.

About the RIPE NCC
We're an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet through technical coordination in our service region. Our most prominent activity is to act as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) providing global Internet resources and related services (IPv4, IPv6 and AS Number resources) to members in our service region.
Our membership consists mainly of Internet service providers (ISPs), telecommunication organisations and large corporations located in Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia.
We also provide services for the benefit of the Internet community at large.
