use of abuse@........

Apologies if this may seem a trivial question but I am after some
information regarding the use 
of abuse@.... for reporting of abuse such as DoS, spam etc for ISP's
customers and wondered if 
anyone could help.
  
Is there any legal or RFC compliance/requirement for using the mail address
of abuse@.. as the 
address for such reporting or is it a convention used by ISP's.
