Lars-Johan Liman holds a Master of Science in Engineering Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. His day job is as a Senior Systems Specialist and co-founder at Netnod, a Swedish Internet infrastructure company owned by a not-for-profit foundation. Since 1994, he has been responsible for the operation of one of the Internet’s 13 root name server systems. What started as building and operating systems that provide critical Internet services, evolved into contributing to the development of Internet standards, and further to Internet governance, and community coordination. He has served as working group Chair in the IETF and as a member of the IETF DNS Directorate. He is co-author of RFC 7720, which clarifies how the root server system operates.
Liman took part in the efforts to create ICANN. He has held multiple ICANN-related roles, including committee member, Chair, and Co-Chair and he was active in the IANA Transition work, the IANA Functions Review, and the ongoing Root Server System Governance Working Group.
Beyond global governance, Liman is and has been involved in various national and regional coordination efforts. He has been an active participant in the RIPE community since 1992.
