RIPE NCC Days Sofia to Promote Internet Development and Cooperation in Bulgaria

June 20, 2023 – The RIPE NCC Days Sofia will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria on 27-28 June 2023. BIX (Bulgarian Internet eXchange) will be hosting the meeting at theHotel Marinela Sofia. This event aims to foster cooperation among network operators in Bulgaria and address specific challenges they face.

The event will focus on the importance of routing security and the role Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) plays in enhancing the security and reliability of Internet routing. Bulgaria is performing well in terms of RPKI, with a coverage of 83% of ROA. The event will be a good opportunity to increase the rate of ROV (RPKI Origin Validation) filtering and to discuss the importance of implementing RPKI in network operations.

Additionally, the event will focus on several key objectives, including promoting the deployment of IPv6 in the country. Despite recent progress, the current rate of IPv6 deployment in Bulgaria is around 11.7% which is below the European average of 29.7%. By stressing the benefits and importance of IPv6, the event aims to encourage greater adoption and help bridge this gap. Among the big operators in Bulgaria, Vivacom has made significant progress in their deployment in the past year. Stanish Stanishev will present on their achievements.

Another aim of the event is to encourage cooperation between operators in Bulgaria.
This platform will enable participants to build relationships, strengthen their networks, and collectively address the issues affecting their operations. The RIPE NCC will also extend its support to address regional concerns and provide guidance, assistance and resources to help operators overcome challenges and seize growth opportunities.

The event features a comprehensive agendaencompassing the latest developments in the Internet industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights from renowned experts and industry leaders. Internet pioneers Veni Markovski and Daniel Kalchev will offer a historical perspective on Bulgaria's Internet-friendly legislation. Svetoslav Naydenov will discuss QoS and DDoS mitigation in IXP, and Vihren Slavchev will give an overview of е-Network security and regulatory practices.

There will also be presentations from the RIPE NCC on Routing Security, IPv6, RIPE Atlas, RIPEstat and RIPE NCC’s Routing Information Service (RIS).

RIPE NCC Chief Community Officer, Hisham Ibrahim said: “By focusing on IPv6 and RPKI, the Bulgarian Internet community can achieve improved scalability and security to the Internet. This can only be achieved through encouraging cooperation and collectively addressing the main challenges facing the network operators. This event will provide a unique platform for knowledge sharing and the exchange of best practice within the Bulgarian Internet community.”
