Business Applications Quarterly Planning

We have three objectives in publishing our quarterly planning:

  1. We want to be transparent about the work we are doing
  2. We want your input on that work and our planning, and we want to document that input, and let you know if and when we can add your suggestions to our planning
  3. We want an open dialogue with members and community on developments around our applications and the LIR Portal

We launched this initiative in Q4 2021, and we are open to improving what we publish here and how we do that. So let us know if there are ways we can better present our plans.

We will update this page as our activities progress and continue to share updates on RIPE Labs, on the RIPE NCC Membership Discussion and RIPE NCC Services Working Group (WG) mailing lists, and at RIPE Meetings and other events.

Q1 2024 Plans

Last Updated: 7 February 2024

Item Activity Description Status

1

Strengthening the security of RIPE NCC Access

Our immediate plan is to strengthen the security of RIPE NCC Access.

Currently, it is optional with RIPE NCC Access to use Two Factor Authentication (2FA). We have recently added a reminder to enable 2FA when users log in to their RIPE NCC Access accounts. This is an interim measure until mandatory 2FA is rolled out. We also show to LIR admins which users have not enabled 2FA. Our plan for this quarter is to make 2FA mandatory.

We plan to continue these improvements next quarter by providing more MFA methods. To achieve this, we are currently working on offloading log-in and log-out flows from an in-house developed code to Keycloak, which is the engine behind SSO.

Apart from the 2FA changes, we are improving security, monitoring and alerting for the solution.

2

Improvements in the registry software

We plan to make some changes to our internal registry software about End Users to make it more future-proof. We want to modify the architecture of how we store some of the information, add some additional functionality and increase automation.

3

Automation of the Assisted Registry Check (ARC)

The ARCs are part of the auditing activity of the RIPE NCC. The process has been email-based until now, with little automation.

We plan to increase automation for this activity to make it easier for members to complete it as well as to increase the efficiency and accuracy of the activity.

Community Input on Planning

We want the community to contribute to our plans and suggest additional work items. Please share your comments with us or post them on the RIPE NCC Membership Discussion or RIPE NCC Services WG mailing lists. And we'll be monitoring all the other channels where people talk about these services.

We will be adding your feedback on this page as we progress with our plans.

Reference Input RIPE NCC Reaction

BA-2021-#01

Request to add a "view only" user to the LIR Portal that would allow the defined user to see all resources of the specific LIR (including RPKI) but not be able to modify anything.

We will not work on these feature requests in the upcoming period due to low interest from the community and limited resources. If there is enough interest to work on these requests, we will prioritise our work items accordingly.

BA-2022-#01

Request on the mailing list to automatically add the primary LIR contact as CC: in all tickets, or to provide the ability to add additional CC:’s via the LIR Portal after the ticket has been created.

Please see above.

BA-2022-#02

Request on the mailing list to have the ability to trim the CC: list of a given ticket (for example to remove ticketing systems), or the ability to add a custom tag to the email Subject: line to facilitate better ticket tracking.

Please see above.
