RIS Quarterly Planning

We launched this initiative in Q2 2022, and we are open to improving what we publish here and how we do that. So let us know if there are ways we can better present our plans.

We will update this page as our activities progress and continue to share updates on RIPE Labs, on the RIPE NCC Membership Discussion, MAT Working Group (WG) and RIS Users mailing lists, and at RIPE Meetings and other events.

Q4 2025 Plans

Item 1: Improve documentation of data artifacts

We have resolved a data inconsistency issue in RIS where data from a single removed IPv6 peer continued to appear in datasets. We will publicly document this, and other (less significant) data artifacts to help researchers. We will crowdsource this documentation.

Item 2: Improvements to Route Collector Infrastructure

We have updated all our route collectors to Oracle Enterprise Linux 9. In the future, after other infrastructure projects, we will start an experiment with a lightweight collector that can collect BGP data without multihop peering. Please contact us if you are interested in this approach.

Item 3: RIS/RIPEstat data processing migration

We have been working on a financially sustainable solution to store Internet Measurement historical data. As part of these efforts, we are preparing to move the big data related to RIPEstat to rented bare metal. In this first step we are replacing our legacy job scheduler by a more modern alternative (azkaban -> airflow) and improving the state of our test cluster.

This migration is the first step of a two-pronged approach. The migration to rented bare metal allows us to reduce our data centre space, with monthly cost equal to current rack space cost, without committing to a full hardware lifecycle. Second, we are investigating alternative storage architectures. Our investigation focuses on reducing our dependency on HBase, and evaluating more efficient alternatives.

When we receive feedback that can significantly impact our planning or that needs a further response, we will add it to the table below.
