Watch: RIPE Atlas - From Core Concepts to Use Cases (Session 1)

Watch: RIPE Atlas - From Core Concepts to Use Cases (Session 2)

Moderator: Alastair Strachan, Community Development Officer, RIPE NCC
Presenter: Stephen Suess, Specialist Frontend Developer, RIPE NCC

Session 1 (30 April 2026)

This session focused on the underlying infrastructure of RIPE Atlas and the primary interfaces used to inspect and analyse data. It highlighted new interfaces and tools that have been added to Atlas in the last couple of years.

Agenda highlights:

Infrastructure Foundations

  • Probes & Anchors: Understanding the global network of vantage points and the role of high-availability anchors
  • Measurements: What they are, how to schedule them and manage data collection (Traceroute, DNS, Ping, etc.)
  • Measurement Form: How to use and new probe selection features such as region and multi country options

Analysis Interface & Tooling

  • Detail Pages for probes and measurements: Overviews, maps and graphs
  • Khipu: Understanding complex traceroute measurements in multi layered visualisations (IP, ASN, Country)
Path Analysis: Comparing the same measurement over time to detect routing, ASN, and RTT changes
  • LIR/Member Overview: Managing and filtering organisational assets with multi-term search

Session 2 (12 May 2026)

This session explored the high-level workflows available in the RIPE Atlas interface, helping you solve specific networking challenges more efficiently.

Agenda highlights:

Network Topology & Routing

  • Region Meshes: Analysing intra-region routing paths and IXP utilisation through Grid, Map, and Sankey views
  • Path Divergence: Visualising how paths branch from a single probe to multiple targets

Monitoring & Health

  • DomainMON: Monitoring DNS performance using the new API endpoint and simplified setup wizard
  • Probe Connectivity: Identify potential outages and connectivity issues across different networks and regions

Real-Time Troubleshooting

  • Quick Look: Testing host reachability from multiple global vantage points with immediate results
  • Quick Khipu: Using real-time traceroute visualisation for rapid diagnosis
