Dear RIPE NCC members,

This is a special edition ahead of RIPE 85, which takes place next week from 24-28 October. Alongside the RIPE Meeting, we will also have our RIPE NCC General Meeting on Wednesday, 26 October.

RIPE 85 will feature Plenary sessions on topics including the Internet revolution in Belgrade, IXP Scrubber, community management, perfSONAR, QUIC, unbiased Internet measurements, automated inter-AS traffic engineering, and much more.

We will also have Working Group sessions throughout the week where you can discuss current topics and participate in chair selections. And RIPE 85 will have several exciting social sessions, parallel events and coffee breaks that are the perfect opportunity to network with fellow engineers, operators and Internet stakeholders. You’ll even have the chance to meet the RIPE Chair Team and the RIPE NCC Executive Board. Don’t miss out!

At the RIPE NCC General Meeting on Wednesday, you will be able to share your feedback on our Draft RIPE NCC Activity Plan and Budget 2023. You will also have the chance to vote on the redistribution of the RIPE NCC surplus, amendments to the Articles of Association, giving the management team authority to call for Executive Board elections, and the removal of paper ballots for General Meeting voting. Remember to register to vote by 26 October at 14:30 (UTC+2).

-- Protecting Resource Holders in Distressed Areas
We have published an article explaining our approach to registry update requests coming from distressed areas. Members have expressed concern about the risk of forced and otherwise illegitimate transfer requests, and we would like to share how we handle these and offer some more possible solutions for the community to consider:

-- Quarterly Sanctions Transparency Report
We have published the Quarterly Sanctions Transparency Report for Q4 2022. This document provides data on how RIPE NCC members, End Users and legacy resource holders are affected by sanctions:

-- Address Policy Working Group Session
The Address Policy Working Group session will take place at RIPE 85 on Wednesday, 26 October from 09:00-10:00 (UTC+2) and from 10:30-11:30 (UTC+2). In the first half, there will be updates on the ASO AC, a RIPE NCC policy update and a policy proposal on removing mandatory IPv4 PA assignment registration in the RIPE Database. The second half of the session will feature a RIPE NCC Registry Services update, a discussion on IPv6 policy goals and a talk on the minimum assignment size for temporary IPv4 assignments:

2. Information Services
-- MAT Working Group Session
The MAT Working Group session will take place at RIPE 85 on Thursday, 27 October from 09:00-10:30 (UTC+2). There will be a number of talks given on topics including measuring Internet routing from the most valuable points, better RIPE Atlas vantage point selection, the impact of the war on routing in Ukraine, 240/4 as seen by RIPE Atlas, and more:

-- RIPE Atlas Probe Troubleshooting Videos

-- Minimising RIS Live Delays
RIS Live delivers RIS data in real time, with minimal delays from RIS collectors to our users. In a new article on RIPE Labs, we look into how big these delays really were and explain what improvements we implemented to further minimise them:

-- RIPE NCC Forum Launched
We have launched a new forum for our members to communicate with us and with each other. The RIPE NCC Forum is an informal communication platform where members can chat about topics that interest them and ask questions for our staff. -- New RIPE NCC Translations Platform
This week, we launched a new RIPE NCC Translations Wiki, where we have translated eight RIPE NCC topics into six languages - Arabic, Farsi, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. -- NRO NC Election
There will be an election to fill one seat on the NRO NC at RIPE 85. All checked-in meeting attendees may vote in the election:

-- RIPE Programme Committee Election
The RIPE Programme Committee is responsible for recruiting and selecting presentations for the RIPE Meeting plenary sessions. There are currently two seats up for election on the Programme Committee. Please send your nominations to <pc at ripe.net> by Tuesday, 25 October at 15:30 (UTC+2). The election will take place at RIPE 85 from Tuesday, 25 October at 16:00 (UTC+2) until Thursday, 27 October at 17:00 (UTC+2). The results of the election will be announced on Friday, 28 October during the closing plenary. For more information about the nomination process, see:

-- RIPE 87 and RIPE 88 Call for Hosts
The call for hosts for RIPE 87 and RIPE 88 is open until 11 November 2022. RIPE 87 will take place from 27 November to 1 December 2023, and RIPE 88 will take place from 13-17 May 2024. See the requirements for hosting and how to apply at:

-- Updates to the RIPE Code of Conduct Process Documents

We have responded to a request from the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Matters of National Security, Defense and Intelligence to discuss measures to protect Internet number resources in Ukraine. We will be presenting on this topic in the RIPE NCC Services Working Group at RIPE 85 next week, and we encourage anyone with an interest in this topic to join that session.
