IPv6 Security Course Outline

This one-day course provides an overview of the most relevant IPv6 security topics. The participant will gain insight into industry best practice and gain a high-level understanding of the most pressing IPv6 security concerns today. The course includes theory and hands-on exercises.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify what IPv6 security is and isn't
  • Identify and protect your network from IPv6-related threats
  • Understand how the IPv6-associated protocols work (e.g. ICMPv6, DHCPv6), how to identify them and protect your network from related threats
  • Recognise the existing security solutions to protect your IPv6 network
  • Understand how to apply filtering in IPv6: packets vs. routing information
  • Understand how Internet-wide IPv6 threats could happen (e.g. DDoS, transition
    mechanisms)
  • Understand the many complexities of IPv6 that must be taken into account from a security point-of-view

Who should attend:

You should attend this training course if you are part of the staff of a Local Internet Registry (LIR) and if:

  • You have knowledge and experience with IPv6
  • Your organisation has implemented IPv6 or is planning implementation
  • You are a security/network/systems administrator, information security officer, IT consultant, or security policy writer

This course doesn’t cover:

  • IPv6 basics
  • IPv6 addresses details and addressing plans
  • IPv6 routing
  • The basics of IPv6-associated protocols like NDP or ICMPv6

This is an advanced course that requires the participant to understand:

Methodology:

This course is based on showing IPv6 security information from three angles: knowing useful details, the attacker point-of-view and the defender point-of-view. Best practice tips and references are given to go deeper into specific topics.

Hands-on labs reinforce the theory, demonstrate the many tools that can be used and how to use some of them.

At the course, we hand out a USB stick containing the course material.

You need to bring:

A laptop with a browser that can be used for the labs.

All IPv6 Security Courses are conducted in English.
We ask everyone to arrive by 09:00 for coffee. The course starts at 09:30 and finishes at 17:30.

Availability

To give as many LIRs as possible the chance to attend RIPE NCC training courses, we can only accept two people from the same LIR per training course. If more than two attendees from an LIR apply, they will be placed on a waiting list and only be admitted to the course once free places become available and on a first come, first served basis.

Costs

The cost of this course is covered by each LIR's membership fee. The course includes lunch and training materials. Travel expenses and accommodation costs during the training course are not covered.
