RIPE Database Web Application Service Interruption

From approximately 16:30 to 17:45 UTC on Wednesday, 13 January, there was an interruption to internal services. This interruption affected the RIPE Database web application, including the webupdates and forgot maintainer password functionality. Whois query and search were not affected. The interruption has now been resolved.

Degraded Authoritative DNS Service

From approximately 08:20 UTC on Monday 14 December, the RIPE NCC authoritative DNS servers are currently receiving a very large number of DNS queries. This has degraded DNS service for the zones we host on these servers, including,, the top-level reverse DNS zones such as and various ccTLDs.

Intermittent Errors Connecting to RIPE Database Services

From approximately 07:00 UTC on Tuesday 1 December, there have been intermittent errors connecting to the Whois REST API ( and the Database website ( This issue is ongoing, and we are investigating the cause.

K-root DNS Services Incident 1 December 2015

Between 05:10 and 06:10 UTC today, multiple root operators including K-root received an unusually large amount of query packets. We believe the event was similar to the events that took place yesterday, 30 November 2015. Following our investigation into this, we enabled counter measures shortly before 06:00 UTC. The query load dropped to normal levels at 06:10 UTC. Our post mortem report of yesterday's event will include today's occurrence.

K-root DNS Service Incident

Between about 07:00 and 09:15 UTC today multiple root operators including K-root were receiving an unusually large amount of query packets. This was impacting the overall performance of K-root DNS services.

RIPE Database Release Deployment Issue

Between 10:08 and 10:12 UTC on Wednesday, 24 November 2015, the Whois REST API ( and Database Web application ( replied "503 Service Unavailable" to some requests, due to a release deployment. This issue has now been resolved.

Reverse DNS Update Issue
RIPE Database Update Service Interruption

From approximately 08:00 to 13:25 UTC on Tuesday 3rd November 2015, there was an interruption to the Whois update service. During this time, it was not possible to create, update, or delete domain objects. This was caused by an error from the DNS validation check. This error also affected the service. This issue has now been resolved.

RIPE Database Service Interruption

From 10:16 to 10:32 UTC on 30 October 2015 there was a brief, intermittent interruption to the RIPE Database service. This was caused by a memory issue on a single production server, which has now been resolved.

Interruption of RIPE Database and Related Services

Starting at approximately 14:30 UTC on 4 October 2015, RIPE Database queries and updates, the LIR Portal and other related services experienced problems. Our investigation found that the service interruptions were due to a hardware failure. The queries were restored at 16:00 UTC and other affected services were restored at around 21:00 UTC. The ability of the RIPE Database to process incoming mail-updates was restored at 12:30 UTC on 5 October 2015. Please be aware that all mail-updates sent to Whois during this outage period must be considered lost.
