Archived: Planned Interruption to Whois Database Service

From approximately 17:00 to 17:45 UTC on Monday, 18 January, there was a planned interruption to the Whois database service. This caused a brief interruption to updates but no query downtime. Normal service has been resumed.

Archived: RIPE Authoritative DNS Services Temporary Degradation

On the evening of Saturday, 16 January, between 20:45 and 21:05 UTC, we received an unusually large amount of incoming traffic on the servers for the RIPE Authoritative DNS services. The volume of traffic was overflowing our inbound connections. This severely impacted our Authoritative DNS services while the attack was ongoing. This attack was quite similar to the incident we reported earlier this week. However, an important difference was that this time the attack traffic was directed at the RIPE NCC DNS services directly. Normal service was restored soon after the attack finished.

RIPE Authoritative DNS Services Degraded

As of approximately 11:20 UTC this morning, we are seeing an unusually large amount of incoming traffic on the servers for the RIPE Authoritative DNS services. The traffic is specifically aimed at the ccTLD secondary service that we host for .ps and is of such a high volume that it is impacting other DNS services. We are in contact with the domain owners and are investigating mitigation capabilities at the moment. We will provide further information as soon as it is available.

RIPE Database Web Application Service Interruption

From approximately 16:30 to 17:45 UTC on Wednesday, 13 January, there was an interruption to internal services. This interruption affected the RIPE Database web application, including the webupdates and forgot maintainer password functionality. Whois query and search were not affected. The interruption has now been resolved.

Degraded Authoritative DNS Service

From approximately 08:20 UTC on Monday 14 December, the RIPE NCC authoritative DNS servers are currently receiving a very large number of DNS queries. This has degraded DNS service for the zones we host on these servers, including ripe.net, e164.arpa, the top-level reverse DNS zones such as 193.in-addr.arpa and various ccTLDs.

Intermittent Errors Connecting to RIPE Database Services

From approximately 07:00 UTC on Tuesday 1 December, there have been intermittent errors connecting to the Whois REST API (rest.db.ripe.net) and the Database website (apps.db.ripe.net). This issue is ongoing, and we are investigating the cause.

Archived: K-root DNS Services Incident 1 December 2015

Between 05:10 and 06:10 UTC today, multiple root operators including K-root received an unusually large amount of query packets. We believe the event was similar to the events that took place yesterday, 30 November 2015. Following our investigation into this, we enabled counter measures shortly before 06:00 UTC. The query load dropped to normal levels at 06:10 UTC. Our post mortem report of yesterday's event will include today's occurrence.
