Message-ID: Dear Test-box hosts. We started to look at staffing for the test-traffic project around the turn of the millenium. All components of the TTM project are Y2K compliant and it is our plan to leave the test-boxes running unattended, as we usually do during a long weekend. In the unlikely event that something fails, we'll simply accept that. Recovery from any unexpected problems will be done on Monday January 3rd. For real emergencies related to the test-boxes, I'll distribute a phone number where I can be reached around midnight GMT. If I cannot be reached, you can simply disconnect the box from the net. Note that the above applies to the Test-Traffic Project ONLY and NOT to any other services offered by the NCC. Please let me know if there are any objects against this scheme. Message-ID: Dear test-box hosts, As announced during the last RIPE meeting, we have installed a network delay alarm on some of the test-boxes. This means that you might receive emails that look like: .............................................................................. Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 15:07:02 GMT From: ttraffic at ripe.net To: henk at ripe.net Subject: Testbox ALARM SET on geuzenveld.ripe.net Reply-To: ops-tt at ripe.net The testbox alarm program on geuzenveld.ripe.net found: TB 27 at 940000021 ALARM SET old: Go Up, new: Alarm TB 27 at 940000021 Long: 10108 75.0/ 83.5/125.0 Short: 42 137.0/141.5/149.0 This message has been sent to: tt27 geuzenveld For an explanation of this email please see http://www.ripe.net/test-traffic/Host_testbox/alarm.html .............................................................................. The most important line is the one starting "TB 27 at 94000021 Long: 10108". It says that for the last 10108 delay measurements from test-box tt27 to test-box tt01 (a.k.a. geuzenveld) there was a median delay of 83.5 ms, with 5% of the measurements below 75.0 or above 125 ms. For the last 42 measurements, this delay suddenly increased to a median delay of 141.5, with 5% below 137 ms or above 149 ms. This might indicate that something changed in the network between tt27 and tt01. For a full explanation, please follow the URL. The message will be sent to the contact persons for tt27 and geuzenveld. If you don't have time to look at these messages, feel free to discard them. If you do have time and are aware that something changed in your network at the time the alarm was set or reset, please send me mail. At the moment, only mails for connections to tt01 will be generated. The expected number of mails is less than 0.5/day, though this will depend on the stability and load of your network connections. We plan to keep this setup running for a week or so, in order to make sure that the number of alarms generated is indeed small and related to real network events. If this is successful, the alarm will be installed on all test-boxes. As you have probably noticed by now, some of the test-boxes have started to generate alarms when delays from/to the box are above the expected values. No big or unexpected problems were found in the code, so we just installed the code on all boxes. We are logging all alarms generated by the boxes and are continiously checking if they can be traced back to a "real" effects in the data. (For example: a change in the routing vector, number of hops, etc, as opposed to a random statistical fluke.) So-far, this appears to be the case. A more detailed study will be done as soon as we have collected more statistics. Also note that there are some startup effects. The code has to figure out what the expected delay for a connection actually is. During this period, it might generate a false alarm or two.
