Message-ID: <20050705175635.18000789.olaf@ripe.net> [Apologies for duplicates] Dear Colleagues The RIPE NCC has been involved with the development of the DNSSEC protocol. Now that the protocol has become available, we plan to implement DNSSEC on our domains in the reverse DNS tree. The deployment of DNSSEC is the second and last phase of the Reverse DNS restructuring project. You can find more information about this project at: http://www.ripe.net/rs/reverse/dnssec/index.html To implement DNSSEC, we propose extending the policy for Policy for Reverse Address Delegation of IPv4 and IPv6 Address Space in the RIPE NCC Service Region. You can find the proposed policy at: http://www.ripe.net/rs/reverse/dnssec/draft-dnssec-policy.html. We welcome your feedback on this poposal before 1 August 2005. Please send your comments to the DNS Working Group Mailing List. We are also introducing two new procedures: "DNSSEC Key Maintenance Procedure" http://www.ripe.net/rs/reverse/dnssec/key-maintenance-procedure.html and "Procedure for Requesting DNSSEC Delegations" http://www.ripe.net/rs/reverse/dnssec/registry-procedure.html Your feedback on these drafts is also welcome, again please send this to the DNS Working Group Mailing List. As part of the "Procedure for Requesting DNSSEC Delegations" we plan to add a "ds-rdata:" attribute to DOMAIN objects. Regards Olaf M Kolkman New Projects, RIPE NCC. We are working now on providing power feeds to the equipment to eliminate any possible disruption of the services. Apparently the hostmaster mailrobot things otherwise and refuses requests with an error because of the org-attribute not being present. I just ran into it on a ASN request, but I recall having problems before with this. Can anybody tell me who is right, the database template or the robot ? In fact, the database reference (http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/databaseref-manual.html#1.2.3) doesn't list it all. In >fact, the database reference (http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/databaseref-manual.html#1.2.3) >doesn't list it all. > > There are two different sets of rules here. The first is for the database: in the case of AUT-NUM objects, the "org:" attribute is optional. This allows AUT-NUM objects that have been assigned before the ORGANISATION class was added to exist, without references to dummy or incorrect objects. We can make "org:" mandatory in AUT-NUM objects. We have made other attributes mandatory in the past, without updating existing objects. This means that old AUT-NUM objects would not be fixed, but any modified objects must have an "org:". Our experience is that this discourages people from updating these objects, so some of them become less accurate, because people do not bother to fix them. The second set of rules is for the resource request process: in the case of ASN requests, we need to know which organisation will be using the ASN. This information is published in the resulting AUT-NUM object, so from this point of view it is a required attribute. Essentially, the database syntax can see seen as a sub-set of the business requirements for assigning an ASN. -- Shane Kerr RIPE NCC From marcoh at marcoh.net Wed Jul 13 18:23:47 2005 From: marcoh at marcoh.net (MarcoH) Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 18:23:47 +0200 Subject: [ncc-services-wg] Re: [db-wg] Status of 'org' attribute In-Reply-To: <42D53D30.9070604@ripe.net> References: <20050713101430.GA29476@marcoh.net> <42D53D30.9070604@ripe.net> Message-ID: <20050713162346.GA29782@marcoh.net> On Wed, Jul 13, 2005 at 06:11:28PM +0200, Shane Kerr wrote: > There are two different sets of rules here. > > The first is for the database: in the case of AUT-NUM objects, the > "org:" attribute is optional. Hmm, at least your story confirms the one I got from hostmaster later today :) >From a database point of view, I understand it's better to keep it optional because of all the legacy objects. But for people who don't read any manual, it's very confusing and annoying. Is there a way or is it an idea to at least change the template returned with -t to mandatory or as I'm probably not the first one hitting this, to have the hostmaster bot send a more descriptive error ?
