From olaf at ripe.net Tue Nov 4 10:23:20 2003 From: olaf at ripe.net (Olaf M. Kolkman) Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 10:23:20 +0100 Subject: [ncc-services-wg] Reverse DNS Restructuring Project In-Reply-To: <20031001173928.27e20e52.olaf@ripe.net> References: <20031001173928.27e20e52.olaf@ripe.net> Message-ID: <20031104102320.5b7e3e49.olaf@ripe.net> Summary of the discussion on the Reverse DNS Restructuring Project proposal. Wednesday October 1, We posted a message [1] requesting feedback on a proposal for restructuring our reverse DNS setup [2]. During the discussion a few minor technical details where raised and clarified. The main focus was on the use of the INETNUM's 'rev-serv:' attribute to carry the information about to which servers reverse zones need to be delegated. The rev-serv: attribute in the INETNUM object has historically been the method to express reverse delegation information. However, delegation information has been carried through the DOMAIN object since 199?. The request to investigate the use for "rev-serv:" for carrying reverse delegation information has been dully noted. Both approaches were analyzed and both have pros and cons depending on a use case. Also we have seen little to no support for the request to use "rev-serv:" and since we feel that the changes to the system should have a minimal effect on the day-to-day operations of our customers we have chosen to go forward with the DOMAIN object to carry delegation information. The existence of both a "rev-serv:" and a DOMAIN object is seen as confusing. Because of the historic use of the "rev-serv:" attribute there will be consequences during the "cleanup" phase of the project. This is because some data in the reverse zones has existed for years and there are no DOMAIN object for these delegations while there are "rev-serv:" attributes for the corresponding INETNUM. Bruce Campel [3] did some research on the "cleanup" effort and from his analysis it is clear that most of the data in the DNS zone files is covered by DOMAIN objects, but that some effort is needed to deal with 'old' delegations that only have a "rev-serv:" attribute. We are continuing our efforts on this project. A proposal for the MNT_DOMAIN authorization method, a proposal for cleanup and a proposal to deprecate "rev-serv:" are forthcoming. We would like to thank those who provided feed-back on the proposal. --Olaf ---------------------------------| Olaf M. Using a set of ten Remote Route Collectors (RRCs) installed at different locations around the world, the RIS collects BGP information from over 200 IPv4 and IPv6 peers. RISwhois complements our existing prefix query and looking glass tools by providing a higher level view over an entire set of RRC routing tables. The service looks up IPv4 or IPv6 addresses in the most recently collected full RIB dumps and reports the prefixes and origin AS numbers that match the specified IP, as well as the RRCs on which the prefixes were seen. This can help users in obtaining a quick answer on route visibility (i.e. where is it seen, how widely does it spread) and in assigning origin AS numbers to IP numbers in applications such as traceroute. RISwhois listens to the whois port (port 43) and outputs data in a format very similar to the route objects specified in RPSL. Thus applications that, to date, consult a routing registry, like whois.ra.net, can easily obtain more accurate IP to AS assignments by contacting the RISwhois server, riswhois.ripe.net, instead. For example, a study in the context of RIPE NCC's Test Traffic Measurements found 21% of a set of unique IPs unmatched when using the routing registry vs. only 1% unmatched when using RIS data. For more information see: http://www.ripe.net/ris/riswhois.html Please send your comments to ris at ripe.net. In order to comply with the IPv4 address allocation and assignment policies we pass each and every address request to our local copy of the auto-hm email-robot. Gives us nice automatic record keeping and avoids silly miscalculations in the addressing plan. The latest version is AFAIK available as ftp://ftp.ripe.net/tools/autohm.1.25.tar.gz Unfortunately this version doesn't know how to handle ripe-283 forms. The "RIPE NCC Tools for Members" page http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/mem-services/tools/ lists the same version. Before we start to modify our local copy: Any plans at RIPE NCC to provide an updated version? We have similar problem. But we also consult lot of Russian LIR's (about 100) Our automatic system provides easy way to prepare requests for RIPE NCC. But we have not time to update automatic system till 19 Nov. The old forms will not be rejected. What will happen is that they won't be recognised as a request for resources and so will be redirected to a lower priority mailbox, . As long as the request is justified the Hostmasters here will approve it for you. That being said, our experience indicates that the new forms are simpler to evaluate and this reduces the time it takes us to process them. That means we can get you resources faster. We want to raise the level and speed of service we offer LIRs. We hope that this new set of forms will help us do that.
