After that date, most old numbers dialled from outside the UK will no longer work (although certain numbers for e.g. special services and mobile telephones do not change). (ISDN numbers WILL change, one understands, but the ISDN number changes will follow the same pattern as the other changes.) People are supposed to be quoting the new numbers only, but many are not. The following may help those who have difficulties - alternatively, make contact by other means and ask for the number. Any other queries should be directed to YOUR local telephone company. However, one could also try the number given: - if it works, great! - else, if it begins "+44 1" and you can't get through, try again later or check the number out by other means or give up; - else, if it does not begin with "+44 1" and does NOT appear in the five exceptional areas described below, try the number given with a "1" inserted immediately after the "+44". For example: -- for +44 71 abc defg, try +44 171 abc defg -- for +44 275 abcdef, try +44 1275 abcdef The five exceptional areas: +44 272 abcdef: try +44 117 9ab cdef (Bristol) +44 532 abcdef: try +44 113 2ab cdef (Leeds) +44 533 abcdef: try +44 116 2ab cdef (Leicester) +44 602 abcdef: try +44 115 9ab cdef (Nottingham) +44 742 abcdef: try +44 114 2ab cdef (Sheffield) Footnotes: The working of the new numbers depends on changes worldwide, not just in the UK. For example, the new codes did not work from Marseille on 1 August 1994 as BT had led one to expect. However, France Telecom made a change in the Marseille exchange later that month, and the new UK codes work throughout the France Telecom telephone service (one understands). Further enquiries to your local telephone company, please. Also, numbers less than 12 digits long (starting from and including the "44" but not the "+") are very unlikely to work. One suggests trying what you are given (just in case the number is indeed correct), but without great hopes of getting through. Apart from straightforward mistakes, one does occasionally see very old (and failing) London numbers quoted - e.g.: +44 1 abc defg (or 01 abc defg, UK internal form) In such cases, it may well be worth trying: +44 171 abc defg and/or +44 181 abc defg From mnorris at dalkey.hea.ie Tue Mar 14 17:25:57 1995 From: mnorris at dalkey.hea.ie (Mike Norris) Date: Tue, 14 Mar 1995 16:25:57 GMT Subject: Training - new registries Message-ID: <9503141625.AA04947@dalkey.hea.ie> At its meeting in January, RIPE undertook to provide training for new registries and to begin preparing the necessary materials. Thank you RIPE: Coordinating the Internet in Europe. Due to the continuing explosive growth of the European Internet there is an immediate opening at the RIPE NCC for a Junior Hostmaster Every host directly connected to the Internet needs an address. NCC hostmasters play a key role in the distribution of the Internet address space throughout Europe. Duties The general duties NCC hostmasters comprise: - to handle all address space related requests - to help maintain the databases the RIPE NCC keeps - to propose new activities, where needed - to report to the RIPE NCC Manager The specific duties of the junior hostmaster are: - to allocate address space to local Internet registries - to support local registries where needed - to assign address space - to review assignments made by other registries - to answer address space related queries - to refer non-routine requests to appropriate senior staff Almost all communications with customers and other organisations involved in Internet address space assignment is via the Internet itself. The position provides an excellent opportunity to work at the very heart of the European Internet industry. Qualifications Essential - willingness to learn quickly about the Internet environment - ability to perform administrative tasks reliably - good knowledge of written and spoken English - good communication skills - ability to learn and use Unix and X-windows based computer tools Desirable - work experience in an international environment - previous exposure to the Internet - basic experience with Unix and X-windows based computer tools The position is suitable both for those with administrative skills willing to learn about the Internet and to recent graduates with Internet experience willing to do administrative work. Female applicants and applicants from all European countries are explicitly encouraged. Depending on their ambitions and abilities junior hostmasters can be promoted to senior positions at the NCC. R I P E RIPE (Reseaux IP Europeens) is a collaborative organisation open to all European Internet service providers. The objective of RIPE is to ensure the necessary administrative and technical coordination to allow the operation of a pan- European IP network. RIPE does not operate a network of its own. RIPE has been functioning since 1989. Currently more than 80 organisations participate in the work. The result of the RIPE coordination effort is that the individual end-user is presented on his desk top with a uniform IP service irrespective of the particular network his or her workstation is attached to. In January 1995 1197911 hosts were registered on RIPE coordinated networks. The total number of systems reachable on the Internet worldwide is estimated at almost five million. R I P E N C C The RIPE Network Coordination Centre supports all those RIPE activities which cannot be effectively performed by volunteers from the participating organisations. Besides supporting RIPE activities in general the NCC provides the following services to network operators: o NETWORK MANAGEMENT DATABASE containing information about address space, routing, DNS domains and contact persons o DELEGATED INTERNET REGISTRY a clearing house distributing IP address space o RIPE INTERNET ROUTING REGISTRY o RIPE DOCUMENT STORE o RIPE INTERACTIVE INFORMATION SERVICE A detailed description of these activities can be found in the RIPE NCC Activity Plan (document ripe-110). This document can be obtained from the RIPE document store. The RIPE NCC is currently staffed by 5 full time employees: one NCC manager three NCC technical staff one NCC administrative staff In addition there is a conscienscious objector performing administrative duties. The NCC is funded by all Internet service providers in Europe who operate local Internet registries. NCC staff are formally employed by TERENA. TERENA TERENA is the European Association of research networking organisations and their users. TERENA has been created by a merger of the RARE and EARN associations. TERENA carries out technical activities and provides a platform for discussion and education to encourage the development of a high-quality computer networking infrastructure for the European research community. Conditions RIPE NCC personnel is employed by the TERENA association under their standard employment conditions. The salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Costs of relocation to the Netherlands will be met. The appointment will be for one year with possible extension. Location The RIPE NCC is located at the Scientific Center Watergraafsmeer (WCW) in Amsterdam. The offices will be situated at NIKHEF, the Dutch National Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics. The NCC has now started an activity to provide this which is expected to provide results by the middle of this year. You can find the current plan below. Anne Lord and Mirjam Kuehne are responsible for this activity. They will provide more information about the planned format of materials etc. upon request. For two reasons it is very important that local IR participate in this work: - the RIPE NCC currently lacks the staff resources to proceed quickly enough - some local IRs already have local material useful for this and most local IRs certainly have experience and requirements which are useful We would like personnel from local IRs to work with us to create the training material. What I mean is *work*, i.e. write, review and refine material. As you know, new registries are now paying a sign-up fee when they are first established. The revenue from these fees will be used exclusively for this training project and for giving guidance to new registries. This means that we will be able to fund work done at the local IR level either fully or partially. If you or your staff can contribute to this we would like to know - who? - for how much time (starting, ending, level of work)? - which part of the plan? - what exists already locally? - what kind of funding required? Please respond to Anne and Mirjam . If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Regards Daniel Karrenberg RIPE NCC Manager The Training Project ++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Project Definition --------------------- This proposal will describe the outline of a proposed training project by the RIPE NCC. - Background - growth of the Internet means more new registries than ever - dynamic framework within which we all operate means constantly shifting procedures - there is no time anymore for RIPE NCC to provide "consultancy service" => therefore a training need has been identified. - Audience - new contributing local registries - existing contributing local registries - Aim - to train new local registries and to - bring existing registries up to date with new guidelines and procedures. - Delivery - on line - hard copy publications - tutorials/lectures 2. Scope of training -------------------- Scope of training is - define responsibilities of RIPE NCC - define responsibilities of local-ir's - define procedures w.r.t interaction of local-ir and RIPE NCC - define procedures w.r.t interaction of local-ir and customer Outside scope - not a consultancy service on how to become an ISP - not how to run your business as an ISP - RIPE NCC not offering domain name registration service 3. Delivery ----------- - WWW pages on web server www.ripe.net (open to all by default) - training courses - training material to accompany courses given 4. Contents of Training ----------------------- - Overview - Roadmap of training document - the contents description Chapter 1 - Introduction Chapter 2 - IP registry Chapter 3 - Routing Chapter 4 - DNS Chapter 5 - Quick Reference Help - Essential Readings (general documents) - Chapters 1. Introduction - Registry system overview - funding basics - decision making process - contributors committee 2. Here is the sequence of events: Tue, 7 Mar 1995 14:03:51 +0100 We receive the signed RIPE NCC Service Agreement from EUnet. Registry it.eunet is *not* on the list of registries to be supported individually. On March 10th or 13th (I do not remember exactly) I get a call from Wim Vink of EUnet BV informing me that EUnet Italy should be supported individually. I inform Wim that we need this in writing including the applicable charging category and a statement to the effect that EUnet BV will pay the requisite charges. We agree that a new agreement form is not necessary, just the above information in writing. Tue, 14 Mar 1995 16:44:10 +0100 We remind EUnet BV that we need the information faxed in order to change your service level. Fri, 24 Mar 1995 10:34:09 +0100 We receive a FAX from EUnet BV which does *not* contain the agreed information. Particularly it says nothing about the charging category nor does it imply a statement regarding payment. Mon, 27 Mar 1995 15:05:14 +0200 We request the information again in a message to EUnet BV, stressing that we will change the service level of it.eunet as soon as we have a FAX copy of the letter. Today Thu, 30 Mar 1995 16:24:16 +0200 We receive another FAX from EUnet BV, this time with the required information. Thu, 30 Mar 1995 17:00:04 +0200 I receive your complaint. Today Thu, 30 Mar 1995 17:42:27 +0200 we change the service level and billing status in the registry database. Here is the SCCS change log: D 1.6 95/03/30 17:42:27 billing 6 5 00002/00000/00030 Let me stress that your complaint had no influence on this. It was done routinely as the FAX message from EUnet BV was processed. > But, I see in the RIPE registries directory the following entry, > which, BTW, is wrong We will gladly correct it as we always do if someone tells us about changed data. > Furthermore, I applied for a class B request for DATAMAT which has > been unanswered by March 13. What's happens? Mon, 13 Mar 95 10:44:02 GMT we have received your request. Tue, 14 Mar 1995 14:27:11 +0100 we have informed you that according to our agreement with EUnet BV this request should be handled through them. A copy of the message went to EUnet BV. In conclusion I have to say that there is no reason for you to complain about the RIPE NCC. We have correctly responded to all requests/messages within about one working day. The delays in this case are not our fault. We have to ask your understanding that we have to be a bit formal in registry matters as we are dealing with 180+ registries and the number is still growing. We always try to make procedures as clear as possible and my staff certainly is as helpful to newcomers as they can be given the still very tight staffing situation. I hope this explanation is sufficient for you and that we can now return to a fruitful cooperation. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
