From BECHA at ripe.net Wed Nov 14 12:15:06 2012 From: BECHA at ripe.net (Vesna Manojlovic) Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2012 12:15:06 +0100 Subject: [dnsmon-user] Update on DNSMON service Message-ID: <50A37D3A.7000004@ripe.net> Dear DNSMON users and contacts, recently you have received personalized email regarding administrative changes to the DNSMON service. In the ideal world, we would have also informed you about other upcoming changes in the same message, but reality is bound to the Murphy's law... so I will approach you via the mailing list - this also gives you an opportunity to give us public feedback. In September, the RIPE NCC membership approved the Charging Scheme 2013, which says that the DNSMON service must become a RIPE NCC members-only service from 1 January, 2013. The document is available at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/ripe-566 Although this will mean some administrative and technical changes, we can assure you that DNS Monitoring will continue to be provided by the RIPE NCC. These changes give us the opportunity to provide better services. As a valued customer of the RIPE NCC, we hope you will join us as we develop the DNS Monitoring service. Administrative Changes ---------------------- From 1 January 2013, only RIPE NCC members will be able to have their domains monitored, and DNSMON will become membership service. That means two different things: If you are already RIPE NCC member, there will be no additional fee for DNSMON service in 2013. However, we do need you to sign an updated "DNSMON Service agreement" before the end of this year. If you are *not* RIPE NCC member, and if you wish to continue to use DNSMON service, we will waive the sign-up fee of EUR 2,000 if you choose to become a RIPE NCC member before 1 January 2013. If you choose not to become RIPE NCC member, you can consider becoming a RIPE Atlas host or sponsor to monitor your DNS in another way. For any admin questions, please write to ncc at ripe.net Technical Changes ----------------- For existing DNSMON clients, it is important to note that in 2013 we are planning to transition DNSMON vantage points from TTM test boxes to RIPE Atlas Anchors. We will be making an integration with RIPE Atlas, and the data presentation and visualisation will be updated too. We will be informing you of the more detailed plans in December. Currently, we are focused on migrating the service of the existing clients; however, we will be opening the DNSMON service to other TLD and ENUM operators in the second half of 2013. We are looking forward to the challenges that these changes will bring, and we invite you to work on this with us. To help us with the development of DNSMON, we ask that you let us know what would you like to use DNSMON for and what improvements could be made to our services. You can reply to this email, or post to the mailing list: https://www.ripe.net/mailman/listinfo/dnsmon-user Best regards, Vesna -- Vesna Manojlovic BECHA at ripe.net Senior Community Builder +31205354444 for Measurements & Tools RIPE NCC http://ripe.net From BECHA at ripe.net Fri Nov 30 11:43:31 2012 From: BECHA at ripe.net (Vesna Manojlovic) Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2012 11:43:31 +0100 Subject: [dnsmon-user] DNSMON plans for 2013 Message-ID: <50B88DD3.9090804@ripe.net> Dear colleagues, Last week I wrote about the administrative changes that will be happening with DNSMON, and now I want to let you know about some of the technical changes that will be taking place next year. We are currently working on the detailed planning for 2013, and for DNSMON we came up with the following dates and milestones. In first half of 2013, we are going to migrate DNSMON functionality to RIPE Atlas and the Atlas Anchors. At the same time, we will keep the "old" DNSMON running based on TTM boxes for the existing clients. We are going to tackle this in two phases: - During Q1, we will prepare data collection and visualisation developments and offer this as a pilot during Q2 2013. This will be offered to the existing clients first and for the same domains. - If the pilot is successful, we will be able to take on new DNSMON clients in second half of 2013. Because of these changes, we expect to have no capacity for additional measurements during the first six months of 2013. This is due to the current storage and visualisation back-end rather than any limitation with RIPE Atlas. During the second half of 2013, we expect to be able to extend capacity again. We do not know if demand will exceed supply by this time because we cannot predict demand due to a whole number of concurrent developments, including the introduction of new gTLDs and the change of DNSMON to a membership service. We will of course try to satisfy requests by DNSMON users to the best of our abilities.
