From menog at ripe.net Tue Sep 11 12:12:15 2012 From: menog at ripe.net (Paul Rendek) Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 12:12:15 +0200 Subject: [cooperation-wg] First Arab IGF, 9-11 October in Kuwait In-Reply-To: <504F0D9A.7090902@ripe.net> References: <504F0D9A.7090902@ripe.net> Message-ID: <504F0E7F.5010600@ripe.net> Dear colleagues, The first Arab Internet Governance Forum (IGF) event will take place in Kuwait, running from 9-11 October. Based on the model of multi-stakeholder dialogue and governance that has underpinned the global IGF over six years, this event marks a significant new opportunity for all Internet stakeholders in the region to participate more fully in Internet governance, and to focus on issues of specific relevance to the Arab region. The RIPE NCC is proud to be a major supporter and sponsor of the Arab Internet Governance Forum. We strongly encourage members of the Internet technical community to take an active role in this event and help to ensure that the fundamental concerns of those who have developed and operate networks are represented. The RIPE NCC is working with industry partners, including AFRINIC, to organise several sessions as part of the event, on topics including Critical Internet Resources (CIR), IPv6 deployment and best practices for Internet capacity building. Even if you are unable to attend, there will be opportunities for you to contribute remotely to these discussions. All relevant information, including online registration, can be found on the website of the host organisation, the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS): http://arabigf.kits.org.kw/ Fellowship program ------------------------- The Arab IGF Secretariat is offering fellowships covering airfare or accommodation for a number of attendees. If you are interested in applying for one of these fellowships, please read the attached document on eligibility, and complete the attached application form. If you are interested in contributing to any of the sessions listed in the draft agenda, you can contact the local host organisation or the RIPE NCC. Industry sponsorship is also welcome, and we encourage anyone with an interest in sponsoring to make contact with the local host organisation. The agenda is updated over time so please have a look now and then. The over arching topic for "cooperation issues" is this time "global governance in a multistakeholder world" and specifically this is triggered by WCIT and the question of what a treaty really implies, and what such can (and can not) include and why. The discussions start on Tuesday where there will be I hope an interesting panel on the topic. See https://ripe65.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/plenary-agenda/ > Tuesday, 25 September 16:00 ? 17:30 > > Plenary > > Internet Governance Update Panel > Patrik F?ltstr?m, Cooperation Working Group Chair > > Mike Blanche, Google > Cathy Handley, ARIN > Gordon Lennox, Former official of the European Commission > Christine Runnegar, ISOC The goal is that this will be a discussion panel. I will moderate, ask questions of course that triggers the discussion, but I also welcome either before or during the meeting suggestions. We will then on Thursday on the cooperation wg continue this with more discussions in the wg. This time the working group meeting will be part of what RIPE call "government roundtable meeting" where also the address policy wg is included. We hope this will attract more non-traditional RIPE delegates to the meeting itself. We do hope this will be interesting for us all, and we are looking forward to next week.
