Actually what RFC822 requires is a little more subtle than that.
Examples:-

   fred . bloggs @ domain    (allowed)
   fred bloggs @ domain      (not allowed)
   "fred bloggs" @ domain    (allowed)

Some mailers are stricter about this than others.
