as for smtp being alive.. out of 4 billion ips some 200k run an smtp server... still a lot more than ftp (including badly configured printers and security cameras).. but considering it's a protocol that was supposed to run on each and every workstation. it's dead. facebook has more users per second than smtp has mails per year. lol.
