If routing was done on boxes separate from the packet-forwarding gateways, it would be possible to handle much larger routing tables at much lower cost. The internal architecture of current routers has basically arrived at this solution already except that you are tied to the router manufacturer's hardware and pricelist. --Michael Dillon
