19 September 2009 - The RIPE NCC's sixth Regional Meeting in Moscow, held from 17-18 September 2009, was the biggest in the event's history, breaking all previous attendance records. Boasting an agenda that ranged from IP hijacking, Internet monitoring tools and IPv6 to the latest developments in DNS, Internet policy and Internet governance, the meeting was praised by attendees.
"The RIPE NCC Regional Meetings in Moscow have already become a good tradition," said Pavel Khramtsov, Deputy Director of RU-CENTER, the Russian domain name registrar that has acted as host of all six RIPE NCC Regional Meetings in Moscow. "This time the meeting brought together a record number of participants and the program was as full of content as ever before. This is also perhaps the first time that Russian governmental bodies have paid such close attention, with Alexey Soldatov, Deputy Minister of Telecom and Mass Communication of the Russian Federation in attendance. We hope that these positive trends will continue in the future, confirming the status of RIPE NCC Regional Meeting as one of the main and imposing industry events in Russia."
The meeting, held at the Marriott Grand Hotel, was part of the RIPE NCC's continued efforts to provide local events focused on Internet issues relevant to specific regions.
Paul Rendek, RIPE NCC Head of External Relations and Communications, comments: “We held our first Regional Meeting in Moscow five years ago, the first time a meeting of this kind had been held in the region. The overwhelmingly positive response from the attendees told us that these meetings were an important development. We have held a meeting in Moscow every year since then; the positive reactions and steadily increasing attendance numbers have only confirmed the value of these events to the regional community. We are proud to be able to provide such a useful forum and look forward to working closely with our colleagues in the region in the future.”
The next RIPE NCC Regional Meeting will be held from 25-29 October 2009 in Beirut, Lebanon, alongside the fifth meeting of the Middle East Network Operators Group (MENOG).
Founded in 1992, the RIPE NCC is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet. The most prominent activity of the RIPE NCC is to act as a Regional Internet Registry (RIR) providing global Internet resources and related services to a current membership base of around 5,500 members in over 70 countries. These members consist mainly of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), telecommunication organisations and large corporations located in Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia.

The RIPE NCC also provides a range of technical and coordination services for the Internet community. These services include the operation of K-root (one of the 13 root name servers), the Deployment of Internet Security Infrastructure (DISI) and DNS Monitoring (DNSMON).
As a result of its established position in the Internet industry, the RIPE NCC has played an important role in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), European Union (EU) workshops and government briefings on key issues in the current Internet landscape.
