Requirements for hosting an instance of K-root

Hardware

We only support rack-mountable (R-series) Dell servers. We do not support servers of other brands such as HP or IBM.

  1. Poweredge R230, R330 or better
  2. 16 GB RAM
  3. Intel Xeon quad-core processor
  4. Dual-port Gigabit Ethernet (the on-board Broadcom NIC will be fine)
  5. PERC H330 hardware RAID controller
  6. 2 x 500 GB 3.5" 7.2K RPM SATA drives
  7. iDRAC 8 enterprise (note: we will NOT accept an iDRAC express)
  8. No operating system (we will install Linux on it)
  9. Rack mount rails to suit the host's infrastructure
  10. Appropriate power cord for the region where the server will be placed

Dell Support

We do not require you to purchase Dell support for this server. However, we strongly recommend it so that if any hardware fails then Dell can replace it easily and quickly.

We will reserve the right to withdraw service from any server that has a hardware fault until the hardware has been repaired or replaced. We recommend buying at least three years of support from Dell to avoid significant delays.

Network requirements

The host must be running a dual-stacked network, ie. there must be both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity in the network, both for management as well as the DNS service. We will not install K-root servers in a network that has only IPv4.

Cabling

We will require THREE network connections, as follows:

  • A connection from the iDRAC interface to the host's own network
  • A connection from the GB1 interface to the host's own network
  • A connection from the GB2 interface to either the host's own network (for the hosted model) or the Internet exchange (for the Internet exchange model)

IP addressing

We will require a number of IP addresses, as follows:

  1. One IPv4 address for the iDRAC 8 card, for out-of-band management. Note that the iDRAC card does not provide proper IPv6 filtering, so we cannot use an IPv6 address for this.
  2. One or more addresses for the GB1 interface for in-band management, in the following order of preference:
    1. One IPv6 address, with DNS64/NAT64, so that the server can still reach IPv4-only devices; or
    2. One IPv6 address and one IPv4 address
  3. One or more addresses for the GB2 interface for BGP peering and K-root DNS service:
    1. One IPv4 address (we will announce both IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes to the peer using BGP multi-protocol extensions); or
    2. One IPv4 address and one IPv6 address (we will announce prefixes matching the peer's address family)

Note that the address or addresses we need for BGP peering do not have to be globally routed. In other words, the IPv4 address can be an RFC 1918 address or part of an address range reserved for Internet exchanges that are not announced in the global BGP tables. The IPv6 address can also be a ULA address.
