Software Engineer, Research and Development Team

Can you help us make the Internet a better place for everyone?

We're looking for a full-time Software Engineer to help us develop our Internet-related measurement systems. If you’re a junior, mid or senior level engineer, this role can be adjusted to match your capacity.

Our team focuses on Internet-related research and development for the benefit of the Internet community. These activities include RIPE Atlas, RIPEstat and various other Internet measurement systems.

Besides our general qualifications, you really need to have:
  • Proven web application programming experience using UNIX/Linux server architectures
  • In-depth programming experience using Python and the Django framework, preferably including RESTful interfaces and DRF
  • Experience with git and CI tools (e.g. Jenkins)
  • General understanding of basic networking protocols, especially TCP/IP, DNS and BGP
  • The ability to carry out tasks individually as well as work in a team
We’d be impressed if you also have:
  • Working knowledge of relevant client side languages, tools and frameworks such as JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, jQuery, Bootstrap, d3, etc.
  • Experience in:
    • Deploying scalable solutions, clustering, load balancing and performance tuning
    • Non-SQL backends such as Hadoop/HBase/thrift/Spark or ElasticSearch
    • Distributed software systems and message queuing mechanisms
    • User interface design experience
  • Understanding of ISP operations, tools and issues
  • UNIX/Linux system administration skills

This role is based at the RIPE NCC office in Amsterdam, together with other members of the Research and Development Team.


The starting salary indications for each level are as follows:
Junior: EUR 44,000 - 49,000 per year*
Mid-level: EUR 49,000 - 55,000 per year*
Senior: EUR 57,000 - 65,000 per year*

*before tax; depending on experience and skillset.

This includes the standard 8% annual “holiday pay” and a 5% end-of-year bonus.
