June 2005

In June 2005, we have entirely re-written the "The LIR Training Course" slides. The reason for the changes were:

  • a new educational approach:
    active learning by course participants;
    using dynamic examples that offer more chance for interaction;
    emphasizing on the "big picture", leaving the details for the documentation;
  • an emphasis on the responsibilities of the LIRs in the processes of Internet Resources distribution, and in the Policy Development Process;
  • a move towards making the LIRs more independent in their decision-making;
  • an improvement of the RIPE NCC procedures and communication (transition from e-mail to web-forms, and wide acceptance of the LIR Portal);
  • an improvement in the training hosting facilities (Internet connectivity available for on-line demos and examples).

The main differences are that:

  • there is more supplementary material: exercises, handouts, examples, and on-line demos;
  • there are less presentation slides, and less details in the slides;
  • there is more emphasis on the usage of web-forms for RIPE Whois Database updates, and LIR Portal request forms, and less emphasis on the e-mail communication options;
  • the order of topics has changed;
  • information about the RIPE Whois Database and information about IPv6 has been incorporated in other sections;
  • Two new topics have been added: "Being an LIR" and "Policy Development Process".

Besides these changes, we still cover the main topics like:

  • clarification of terminology,
  • explanation of how to obtain resources,
  • efficient communication with the RIPE NCC.

Both new and old presentation slides are available for download.
