Abstract:
Inspired by well-known work to determine the exhaustion date for IPv4 numbering resources, we designed and implemented a simulation framework for modelling IP address allocation and usage growth. We use available historical data to derive alternative exhaustion dates, but also implement 'pluggable' behaviour modules to examine the effects of LIR behaviour close to exhaustion time, given different allocation policies. Some conjectures on the post-exhaustion world are examined, and a visualisation technique for IP address data is discussed.
