Remember to bring your wireless card to the RIPE Meeting!

Meeting announcements and changes will be made available on the flip chart at the Registration Desk and on http://rosie.ripe.net.

Connectivity

As the increasing number of ADSL like services and cross talk in Amsterdam's old copper network has affected the connectivity of the RIPE Meetings, the RIPE NCC has now upgraded the connectivity offered at the RIPE Meetings. In order to meet the growing connectivity requirements of RIPE Meeting attendees, the RIPE NCC has deployed a fibre connection to the Hotel Krasnapolsky to privide a bandwidth of up to 100Mb.

The connectivity to the Hotel is provided by Global Voice Networks.

The RIPE NCC provides graphs that show current traffic information during the RIPE Meeting and from the RIPE Meeting address space (only accessible within the Meeting network).

Terminal Room

The conference site has a Terminal Room with 20 PCs, a printer and a number of laptop drops. You can get a patch cable to connect to an available switch at the registration desk. The room will also have 802.11b wireless connectivity.

The Terminal Room is in the Foyer Room and will be open at the following times:

Open
Supported
Monday - Thursday
8:30 - 20:00
9:00 - 18:00
Friday
9:00 - 13:00
9:00 - 13:00

Grand Ballroom / Plenary Room

The Grand Ballroom will be equipped with wireless connectivity. One half of the room will be set up with tables with power for wireless laptop users. You can find Ethernet switch ports at the last rows. Patch cables are available at the registration desk.

Wireless Connectivity

Remember this is an unsecure network that is vulnerable to snooping! Please read our note about wireless security.

The Krasnapolsky Hotel provides wireless connectivity in the bar and the Foyer Room. If you want to use the hotel's wireless connectivity, you will have to pay for this service. To make sure you are not using their wireless connectivity, configure this network name:

IEEE Name/ESSID: ripemtg

The RIPE NCC will be providing a limited number of wireless cards for loan to attendees during the RIPE Meeting. Cards will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Registration Desk from Monday.

Checkout Procedure

  • We will take a credit card number to ensure timely return of your card.
  • On Friday (or earlier if you wish), please return the cards to the Registration Desk.

In the unfortunate event that you lose or break the wireless card, your credit card will be charged EUR 250.

Wireless Specifications

If you already own a wireless card, please feel free to bring it. If you are looking to buy a wireless card, you should probably get any brand of card that offers IEEE 802.11b compliancy. You'll probably want to get a card that uses Direct Sequence (DS) technology, as frequency hopping is not compatible with DS transmissions.

There will be connectivity for people with:

802.11b Compliant, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum 2.4 GHz (DS) cards
(11 Mb/s)

Drivers

Drivers can be downloaded from:

Squid Cache

Take advantage of the RIPE Web cache! In addition to saving scarce bandwidth, caching reduces the load on the Web sites you're accessing, and gives you lower latency to overseas hosts.

Follow these steps to configure your browser to use the cache.

  • Netscape users:
    • Select Edit from the main menu bar
    • Select Preferences....
    • In the preferences window, click on the small triangle next to Advanced
    • Select Proxies
    • Select the Automatic proxy configuration option
    • Enter the following host name: server.ripemtg.ripe.net
  • Explorer users:
    • Select View on the main menu bar
    • Select Internet Options at the bottom
    • Select the Connection tab
    • Select Configure... in the Automatic Configuration sub-window
    • Enter the following host name: server.ripemtg.ripe.net

The RIPE 47 cache uses Squid, a freely available Web proxy cache.

IPv6

All RIPE wireless and terrestrial Ethernet ports will be IPv4/IPv6-ready. The RIPE Meeting site will have connectivity to the IPv6 network via a tunnel to RIPE NCC office. Our provider is SURFnet. You'll want to use IPv6 stateless address autoconfiguration (RFC 2462). We do not provide static IPv6 addresses. The address space we will use is 2001:610:241::/64.

Please, do not run router advertisments on the Meeting network

IPv6 implementations for various laptop platforms are available from ipv6.org.

DHCP

We assign addresses dynamically from the RIPE Meeting address space. For this meeting we are running Dynamic DNS updates.

The RIPE NCC provides graphs will show information from the RIPE DHCP server during the RIPE Meeting and from RIPE Meeting address space only. The first graph shows the number of IP addresses assigned and the number of MAC addresses making DHCP requests. The second graph shows the rate at which addresses are assigned.

Static addresses

If you need static addresses you will find RFC 2322 compliant clothpegs at the Terminal Room near the printer.
