Amsterdam HistoryThe word "Amsterdam" comes from "Amstelledamme", a name that occurs for the first time in the toll concession records of Floris V, Count of Holland, dated 27 October, 1275. The city developed around a dam in the Amstel river towards the end of the 12th century. Today it is the capital of the Netherlands - but not the seat of the government which resides in The Hague. The characteristic cityscape developed during the so-called Golden Age when Amsterdam was the centre market of the world. During the New Golden Age, triggered by the Industrial Revolution, many "improvements" were made to the city resulting in what we now recognise as large-scale damage to the historical heart of the city. Canals, for example, were filled in to provide places for cars. Today the heart of Amsterdam has the status of "Monument". New buildings blend in with the old, often by using the old existing facades for a new building. Car traffic into the city centre is discouraged through very high parking prices. |
