Summary of highlights and actions

Rhodes is an island whose combination of sea and sun is unique - explaining
why, in ancient times, it was believed Rhodes to be the daughter of the sea-god
Poseidon and wife of Helios, the sun-god.
The first inhabitants of Rhodes were the Telchines, skilled craftsmen
with a particular talent for metal-working. After a flood, they were succeeded
by the Heliads, legendary descendants of Helios, who devised a system
of measuring time and rules for navigation.
In 408 BC the three largest and most important cities of the island Kamiros,
Ialissos and Lindos united to form the City Of Rhodes, a move that resulted
the New City to be an important political, religious, commercial, and
market centre. During the 2nd Century BC, Rhodes became a Roman prefecture
and later on when the Roman Empire split, Rhodes was included in the Byzantine
Empire. The famous Knights of the Order of St. John came to the island
around 1309 AD.
