37th RIPE Meeting - Meeting Plan

The meeting took place at the following venue:

Hotel Krasnapolsky
Damsquare 9,
Amsterdam

* Meeting Plan
Meeting Plan
* Newcomers Introductory Talk
The Newcomers Introductory Talk will take place on Tuesday 12 September, 2000 from 16:30 - 17:30.
This session is designed to provide an overview of the RIPE meeting to first time attendees. General information about RIPE and the RIPE NCC will also be presented.
* EOF (European Operators Forum)
This EOF program is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 12 September, 2000 from 10:00 - 17:00.
The morning session: Wireless and IP.

1. UMTS (speaker to be confirmed)
2. IP addressing for GPRS mobile terminals (speaker: Kim Fullbrook)

The afternoon session: Lawful Interception and what this means for ISPs.

1. Rogier Holla (European Commission)
2. Robin Gape (BT & chairman of the ETSI LI WG)
3. Roland Perry (LINX)

* DNS-sec Workshop
Tuesday 12 September, 10:00 - 17:00
This workshop regarding the new secure DNS extensions to the domain name system (DNSSEC) is held to gather operational experience from dealing with available software and tools, and to discuss various aspects of the protocol and its implications on the DNS business as a whole, e.g., relationships between registries, domain name holders, registrars, and DNS operators. The workshop will start at 10:00 AM with presentations about the general structure of DNSSEC and the various tools used during the following hands-on session. After that, we will, together, try to establish a local DNS tree that can handle authenticated DNS data transfer properly.

The participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops with some version of Unix (NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, any Linux, Solaris, SCO ...). A few Unix workstations will be provided on site for people without Unix laptops, but they are a very limited resource. The participants are expected to have working knowledge of Unix and good knowledge of traditional DNS. Free DNS software (BIND v9.0) for installation at the workshop will be provided on site.

And, finally, this is _NOT_ a course, this is a workshop, where you are supposed to put substantial energy into solving problems yourself, and work and explore together with others to share and gain experience in a new field, which isn't mature enough for courses yet.

Workshop leaders:
Lars-Johan Liman, Royal Institute of Technology, hostmaster for the Stockholm root name server, chair of the IETF DNS operations working group.
Ed Lewis, TISlabs, a sub-division of Network Associates, Inc., author of the dns_signer tool and several documents regarding DNSSEC, and active in the DNSSEC design efforts.

* Multicast Routing Workshop
Tuesday 12 September, 10:00 - 17:00
The tutorial focuses on multicast applications and therefore the largest part of the tutorial will be dedicated to demonstrating three selected applications. A demo network with servers and end-user stations will be set up for this purpose. We will pay attention to how to configure the applications for multicast, and also to validating and troubleshooting the multicast operation. The latter will liaise to IP Multicast routing whenever appropriate (e.g. when doing application troubleshooting), and therefore the tutorial should be equally interesting to network engineers as to application engineers.
The three selected applications are:

1) RealNetworks (Patrick De Muynck, BELNET)

In the immediate future, live and scheduled broadcast of audio/video is arguably the application on the public Internet that will benefit most of IP Multicast. Not suprisingly, today's streaming softwares are all multicast enabled.
In the tutorial we will focus on the popular RealNetworks product and discuss its deployment in IP Multicast enabled networks and transition issues from unicast-only to multicast enabled. We will discuss the multicast features in great detail, and also similarities and dissimilarities with other streaming softwares. Attention to standards and standards compliance will be paid.

2) SSM-enabled broadcast (Arjen Boers, Cisco)

The tutorial focuses on multicast applications and therefore the largest part of the tutorial will be dedicated to demonstrating three selected applications. A demo network with servers and end-user stations will be set up for this purpose. We will pay attention to how to configure the applications for multicast, and also to validating and troubleshooting the multicast operation. The latter will liaise to IP Multicast routing whenever appropriate (e.g. when doing application troubleshooting), and therefore the tutorial should be equally interesting to network engineers as to application engineers. Moreover, at the end of the tutorial Cisco will answer questions about SSM and multicast deployment issues in general, in a 45' Q&A session.

3) VCON Interactive Multicast (Patrick De Muynck, BELNET)

The deployment of H.323 MCUs as a solution for multipoint IP (video)conferencing has drawbacks which may be more or less important, depending on the application and the environment. These drawbacks include financial implications, administrative overhead, scalability problems, robustness... Although it does not provide all features of an MCU, multipoint IP (video)conferencing based on IP Multicast may be a very good solution that addresses the aformentioned drawbacks in a nice way. In this context, we will discuss the underlying model of "VCON Interactive Multicast" in detail, and we will relate this to the well known models of H.323 and the MBone tools. Also the relation with streaming will be touched upon.

* IP Request Tutorial

This tutorial contains selected parts from the LIR courses we provide to our members throughout the RIPE NCC service region and contains the following concentrated sections:

  • How to Request Address Space
  • Completing the Request Form
  • Evaluation
  • Specific Assignment cases
  • New Allocation

It is not necessary to register and you are all more than welcome to attend this tutorial which is open for anyone attending the RIPE meeting!

*Opening Reception
All meeting participants are invited to attend the RIPE Meeting Opening Reception. The Opening Reception will take place on Tuesday afternoon at the Hotel Krasnapolsky. This event is sponsored by GTS.

*Wednesday Social Gathering
More information will soon be available on this page.

* RIPE Dinner
The RIPE dinner will take place aboard the historical saloon boat the "Prins van Oranje". Cruising around scenic Amsterdam on this remarkable vessel will be like taking a voyage back in time to a Grand Cafe in the roaring twenties. The 53-meter-long "Prins van Oranje" was built in 1908 and is considered one of Holland's most beautiful classical ships. With a reputation for culinary excellence, the cruise is guaranteed to be a memorable evening for all.
