[I apologize for being off-topic, but this needs explaining]
Hi Gabor and others,
The top line:
> From owner-netnews-wg@localhost Mon Feb 5 18:44:04 1996
is made this way with great care. Its purpose is to direct bounces,
vacation messages and the like to the list maintainer who has a fighting
chance to fix problems instead of the submittor of a message, who does
not have any control over the mailing list. (in case you're wondering,
we collected about 1000 bounces during the last two weeks alone
so I hope you understand why we're doing this).
It is called the 'envelope address' and should ONLY be used by
MTA's (Mail Transfer Agents, e.g. sendmail), and never by
MUA's (Mail User Agents such as MH or ELM).
MUA's should use the other from-line:
> From: markt@localhost (Mark Turner)
Can you please check your mailer on this?
(I don't want to start a mailer fight here but MH works correctly
in this case, so that would be my recommendation)
If the WG wants, I can change things back (we're doing this for
more than a year now), but I think that the submissor of messages
on the list really doesn't want to see the gory details of broken
mailers spread all over Europe...
