SLA for international connectivity

we are in the process to buy some more international bandwidth.
In the past, internet access was usually "best effort". As we
made very bad experiences with this approach, we are looking for
SLA (service level agreements) that guarantees us some quality
from the transit ISP.
Does anybody share their view on SLA with us? We would provide
(if enough input) a summary of what is useful to this list.
What we have heard - and are considering - are (beside availability
issues like one day fee back for each hour downtime) ping measurements
to a large number of servers which need to fulfil a certain degree
of quality (delay, loss).
With regards,
