Spam setting the 'read' flag?

Hi,

Lately, mally.net seems to be getting a lot of mail which has the 'read'
flag already set, so that when I view it in pine, I have holes in my
index, which I guess draws my attention to the spam.

Is this why they do it? To draw my attention to the spam?
