Right now, many organizations are dealing with the reverse problem,
that something which has been in the books at certain values has
suddenly evaporated (or, more precisely, there is no longer a liquid
market which determines its value).  At some point, some of these
assets will be traded again, and then you've got the same effect you
describe -- value coming out of nowhere.
