RIPE NCC Funding Situation

Dear colleagues,

at the last RIPE meeting I gave a very short report on the state of NCC
funding for 1994.  Since then Rob and I have made some effort to solicit
more commitments from service providers.  This message is a detailed
status report of the funding situation. 

The table below gives an overview of all organisations participating in
funding the RIPE NCC during 1993 and 1994. 

The total expenditure of the NCC in 1994 is budgeted to be 260kECU,
which is a lean budget not providing for more staff (yet) although both
the number of tasks and the resources required by some tasks are
increasing. 

From the totals below you can deduce that we are still short of
commitments.  RARE has decided to accept the risk of shortfalls in
income for 1994 in order to guarantee that the NCC will be able to
operate.  Of course it would be bad for the future of the NCC if
this guarantee should be used. 

We are now receiving support from the RARE secretariat in the funding 
effort.  The secretariat will start the billing of all organisations 
which have made formal commitments and contact all organisations 
which have made informal commitments or not reacted tou our letters yet.

What *you* can do:

1) If you have made an informal commitment before but not yet
   sent either billing details, check or purchase order, please do
   so as soon as possible to:

2) If you know any organisation which should be approached but
   is not on the list below, get in touch with us preferably
   providing a contact name there.

3) If you are concerned about the relative amounts contributed by
   particular organisations, please tell *them* first. 


I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have indeed
contributed to the funding of the NCC in the past and those who already 
have made firm commitments for 1994. Especially I would like to thank
the EARN association for their substantial contribution in 1992 and 1993.

Notes on the table:

        The order and grouping of contributors is in the table is
        historic and insubstantial. 
        
        The columns labeled "firm" represent firm commitments or
        received amounts.  The "ind." column represents informal
        indications. 
        
        An amount of 1 in the "ind." column represents an informal
        commitment to contribute, but no amount. 
        
	The numbers for 1993 are in some cases computed as
        (.25 * FirstYearContribution) + April-December-1993Contribution.
	Since the results have not been rounded some of these 
	may seem a bit odd.
