Well, there is another point. Whatever one may think of the technology they
initially chosed, both DFN and JANET started very early to actually connect
their users, installed the infrastructure, etc. Thus, they had a large
"installed base", and are in a good position to migrate that installed base
towards IP. In short, it pays to work and it pays to be used to provide a
service...
