From andrew at ripe.net Mon Sep 24 15:43:12 2007 From: andrew at ripe.net (Andrew de la Haye) Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 15:43:12 +0200 Subject: [ca-tf] Minutes: Certification Task Force teleconference, 21 September 2007 Message-ID: <3550F1C8-458E-41C5-90E9-4023B406061F@ripe.net> Dear all, Thanks for participating. Below the minutes of the teleconference. Certification Task Force teleconference, 21 September 2007 Present: CA-TF members: R?diger Volk, Nigel Titley, Gert Doering RIPE NCC: Axel Pawlik, Andrew de la Haye, Daniel Karrenberg, Andrei Robachevsky, Paul Rendek, Robert Kisteleki, Filiz Yilmaz, Henk Uijterwaal Scribe: Chris Buckridge Andrew outlined the agenda, based on the Power Point document distributed to the mailing list. There were no additions to the agenda. The progress to date was outlined, including development of the prototype system, the report given at RIPE 54, and the areas identified as being critical to the project's completion. Progress made since RIPE 54 was noted, including coordination of some inter-RIR discussion, and the identification of some significant differences in how the different RIRs currently operate (including the effects this may have on implementation scenarios). Open items include the need for a production-ready prototype. It is also necessary to get more feedback from the TF members. Andrew indicated that Daniel will be meeting TF members one-on-one, prior to the a planned TF meeting in January 2008. Henk asked whether work being done in the IETF Routing Security Working Group might overlap with the areas that Daniel is looking at. Daniel noted that RIPE, unlike the other RIRs, is intending to discuss the implications of certification thoroughly with the community before implementing anything. Daniel is looking at the more practical applications side, not going into technicalities. A probable outcome of this exercise is the delivery of a white paper on possible applications of certification. This includes routing security, particularly in relation to R?diger's expressed concerns regarding backward compatibility, as well as how certification might be used to simplify provisioning processes, and how certification might be used to make resource transfers more secure. Andrew noted, due to remaining open questions, the TF's final report will be now delivered at RIPE 56. The Action Plan outlined in the presentation was discussed. Nigel noted that the current plan sounded reasonable, and it was generally agreed that it was sensible to shift the final report from RIPE 55 to RIPE 56. It was agreed that a report delivered at this stage would be rushed. Nigel asked about whether there would be a TF meeting at RIPE 55; Daniel noted that this does not fit into the current plan. Paul suggested that it might be worth having the other RIRs give presentations on what they have done in regard to certification. Members of the TF agreed that it would be good idea to hear from other RIR representatives and have time for subsequent discussion. Daniel would also like to engage some TF members (particularly R?diger) about white papers for the services area. Paul suggested that the TF may want to give the community an update. It was generally agreed that it would be sufficient to say that the project is ongoing, the TF is working, and the community will be updated as results emerge. Action items: A 2-hour slot in the RIPE 55 schedule will be booked for the Task Force to meet and be briefed by representatives of the other RIR certification project teams.
