Well, YMMV, but I just *cannot*read* HTML mail anyway - as I'm using a
text mode e-mail client.

Text-only e-mail clients are perfectly well capable of displaying HTML,
the surprisingly simple reason being that HTML itself is text. Sort of.
The *readability* of the content surely is a different story, but that's
something "businesses" in general don't care about anyway.

Surprisingly enough, communication with our customers works very well.

Of course is does. You don't have to display the e-ignorance that seems
to be a hallmark of "businesses" in general to be able to communicate
with your customers.

The only things that come in as HTML-*only* are SPAM, Advertising, and
Viruses.

Not the *only* things, but it comes damn close.
