RIPE 53, IPv6 WG minutes
-----------------------------------------------------------
WG: IPv6
Meeting: RIPE 53, Amsterdam
Date: Wednesday, 4 October 2006
Time: 17:00-18:00 (UTC +0200)
Chair: David Kessens
Minutes: Robert Kisteleki (RIPE NCC)
J-Scribe: Ferenc Csorba (RIPE NCC)

WG URL:http://www.ripe.net/ripe/wg/ipv6/index.html
--------------------------------------------------------

A. Administration - David Kessens

Blue sheets were not used this time.

There were no changes to the agenda.

--------------------------------------------------------

B. Quick Update From the RIPE NCC About IPv6 Services - TBA (RIPE NCC)

Wilfried Woeber suggested that it would be nice if the RIPE NCC could later present the technical difficulties experienced, applied solutions, etc. regarding enabling IPv6 for its various services.

--------------------------------------------------------

C. Global IPv6 Routing Table Status - Gert Doering

The group discussed the fact that the total number of IPv6 prefixes is slowly rising (again). This seems to be a result of a few ISPs having a large number of entries, while most having much less.

Bernard Tuy suggested that the work behind the presentation is useful and needed. He suggested that the RIPE NCC could continue with it (maybe as a form of RIPE Document) instead of it being a private work. Geoff Huston replied that this stuff is basically already being done hour by hour (bgp.potaroo.net). It was agreed that such data could also be used as input for filter recommendations.

--------------------------------------------------------

D. Impact of 6bone Address Space Depreciation - Gert Doering

There was no presentation for this item.

The general agreement from the WG was that the 6bone can be declared as closed.

--------------------------------------------------------

E. IPv6 Multihoming Solutions - Marla Azinger
http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-53/presentations/multihoming_solutions.pdf

There were no comments or questions on the presentation.

--------------------------------------------------------

F. Proposal for IPv6 Multihoming Using PA Space - Iljitsch van Beijnum (Muada)
http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-53/presentations/multihoming_paspace.pdf

Background reading material:
http://www.muada.com/drafts/draft-van-beijnum-v6ops-pa-mhome-community-01.txt

Gert Doering noted that this draft is useful.

--------------------------------------------------------

G. Report(s) About Actual v6 Traffic Volume as Compared to v4

IPv6 traffic during the RIPE meeting - James Aldridge
--------------

Since IPv6 servers are still rare, it is not surprising that natural IPv6 traffic is not high yet. Some ISPs are not even offering SLAs regarding IPv6.

James was encouraged to continue on giving feedback on the IPv6 usage, since it could be interesting/useful for the WG.

Ether Type Analysis on the AMS-IX Platform - Elisa Jasinska
--------------

Gert Doering asked if this was only XS4ALL traffic?

Elisa responded that she didn't know exactly yet, and that hopefully she will soon have results on member-to-member stats.

Iljitsch van Beijnum said that about 4.5% of AMS-IX members had IPv6 enabled websites, according to his last measurements (1 year ago).

Jordi Palet said that we only measure native IPv6 but not encapsulated traffic, which could tweak the statistics.

Iljitsch van Beijnum has developed a web crawler that also looks at IPv4/IPv6. If there's interest, he could clean up the code and make it available to the public.

--------------------------------------------------------

H. Question to the audience: 6to4 deployment stats - David Kessens

Geoff Huston said that leakage shouldn't happen and is hard to spot.

Gert Doering said that this is true, however there are a number of public 6to4 relays that purposely send the anycast prefix to the global routing tables, so these can be spotted.

--------------------------------------------------------

I. Impact of ip6.int Deprecation - David Kessens

--------------------------------------------------------

J. Developments/Initiatives Regarding IPv6 in the RIPE Region and Beyond - Bernard Tuy

Iljitsch van Beijnum said that the Dutch IPv6 force is organizing a conference on the topic as well (in Dutch).

--------------------------------------------------------

Y. Input for the RIPE NCC Activity Plan

David encouraged all to approach the General Meeting if they have thoughts on this in general.

Z. AOB

Skipped.

Wrap-Up & Close
