Legacy space in the RIPE Registry
Legacy space is the IPv4 address space that was distributed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority's (IANA) central registry prior to the formation of the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) system.
After the RIPE NCC was established as an RIR, IANA authorised it to take over administrative responsibility of the address space that it had distributed in what is now defined as the RIPE NCC service region (Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia).
There are approximately 2,500 organisations in the RIPE NCC service region holding 4,500 legacy space prefixes.
The majority of legacy space registrations have not been updated by their resource holders since the transfer was made from IANA's central registry into the RIPE Registry.
The RIPE NCC has been working together with the RIPE Chair, Rob Blokzijl, to establish the best way to get in contact with legacy space holders.
