Experimental RIS Announcements: RIPE NCC Internal Procedures Amended

Archived This content has been archived and is no longer actively maintained.

24 September 2010 - On 27 August 2010, the RIPE NCC's Routing Information Service (RIS) was involved in an experiment using optional attributes in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). As a result of this experiment, a small, but significant percentage of global Internet traffic was disrupted for a period of about 30 minutes.

After the incident we reviewed our existing internal procedures and, following feedback from the community, amended them to ensure that any future experiments of this nature are announced in advance.

See details of the experiment and the impact analysis.
